I'm finding you all so smart and enlightened..mature and insightful. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I have two questions: what was it like when you were taking the hormones (physically and emotionally)..and did you change your names? (not necessarily legally...but wanted to be referred to by a new name.)

My 15 year old daughter recently told me she wants to transition to a male--do you have any advice on how I can share this website with her and not seem like I'm being unsupportive? Thank you. I'm completely new to this and don't know where to begin.

CRT, my advice would be to watch the video together with her, but I am not a parent. Check out the websites TransgenderTrend and 4thWaveNow if you would like to hear from other parents.

If you're not supportive, your kid will know. The only way for her to feel supported is if you support her. So open your mind - there's a very good chance your kid is, in fact, trans. The only way you can show your child this video with any credit is if you find similar video of interviews or discussions with happy trans boys (yes, your kid has probably already seen these, but you need to make sure your kid knows that you have seen them). Then you let your child know that you fully support whichever outcome may happen, and take the steps you need to take to support your child's exploration. Your child needs to go on their own journey, and the more supportive you are, the better things will be for them. (I am using gender neutral pronounds because it is not clear from your story which pronouns your child would prefer right now).

Can I just say how incredible the four of you are? I'm so sorry that you suffered so much as teens but your ability to now analyze and deconstruct (and construct!) all the various factors that combined in social media to affect you in all the ways it did is amazing.

I love that you are using your very recent experience to hopefully speak directly to girls who are in the middle of this right now.

At 34.00 approx you relate a story of an artist who described how becoming trans was a form of suicide - killing the person you were before to create a completely new identity. As Ciara says it was to create a "fresh start". But the saddest comment was Helena, "yep, The Loser Girl could become The Trans Man".

I would really like you to discuss why and how the audience for and the gaze Trans Men are appealing to is female. Do you think they are becoming "The Ideal Guy" for the adolescent female gaxe?

Trans women often seem to take as their models Porn Stars because they know that's what the Male Gaze wants and enjoys.

How do you think they are different and similar? Would you all be kind enough to do another Q & A session so we could all send in questions?

Thank you all for this video and for your willingness to share your stories.

My 14 year old daughter has recently told us she is a trans guy. And yet your stories about your own journeys sounds so much like where she is: no real life friends, socially awkward, loathing her looks, feeling like “not a real girl” because of her interests, and style. Her entire social life exists online — Tumblr, Reddit, and Discord— and it’s been years since she has had a close friend in real life. The online world is her escape.

I appreciated your advice about not cutting off the social media; I had been planning that approach. I will take your advice instead.

I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on what I believe to be a strong current of misogyny in the online culture. I have two daughters both into gaming, anime, and art & they spend a lot of time online in those worlds. They seem to disdain anything perceived to be “feminine” and I don’t think they see that being female can mean many different things. I’d love to hear your thoughts on that topic and your own feelings toward being female in the Internet culture.
